Spray Technique
For silver colours that mostly contain the 900+ toner MM9021 Ultra fine Silver (e.g. Toyota 1L3, I Silver Met)
Note:
- Due to the nature of the very finely ground chrome style pigment in colours containing this toner, a different than normal application technique is required to achieve a successful application. (see below).
- Sanded panels must be finished with a sandpaper no courser than P1200 (otherwise sanding scratches may be visible in the finished job).
- Colours cannot be applied over a WOW primer (as the texture of the WOW primer may show through the finished job).
- Unless otherwise stated all thinning ratios are at 20%.
- Spraygun used: Iwata LS400 Entech, 1.2mm setup.
- Note this toner needs to be applied with a gun that has a very fine atomisation.
Step 1
Apply a black base with MM912 Black toner (two coats or until covered). Dry with air as per normal.
Step 2
- With a LS400 1.2, set the needle at 3x turns out (from the fully wound in position)
- Set the air pressure at 2.5 bar.
- Apply a light contamination coat.
- Next, apply 2 - 3 x coats which are just wet enough (without showing the blue latex). This can be achieved by increasing the spraygun distance from the panel to about 30cm (at 2.5bar). By the end of these coats we are looking to have approx. 75% coverage over the black base (a slight black mottle on the panel will still be visible at this stage).
Step 3
1/2 the guns fluid setting by turning the needle in to 1.5 turns out (from the fully wound in position) then using a cross coat application technique with 75% overlap (at a pressure of 3 bar) apply 3-5 coats, or until an even silver/chrome mottle free finish is achieved.
Step 4
- Apply a light coat of clearcoat (so as not to wet the silver up too much that the silver may slide). Let the tac coat of clear flash off and setup.
- Apply a 2nd medium wet coat of clearcoat, and if required a 3rd medium coat.
