Transporting Aerosols without Segregation

The "Land Transport Rule: Dangerous Goods 2005" outlines the requirements for transporting Aerosols with other classes without segregation.

In Section 6.3 Requirements for segregation by class or division of dangerous goods:

6.3(4) Aerosol canisters with a water capacity of one litre or less may be transported without segregation from other dangerous goods of all classes and divisions or from food items, except as follows:

1. aerosols must not be transported on the same vehicle as dangerous goods of Class 1 not specified in 2.5; and
2. aerosols must not be transported in the same packaging as dangerous goods of Class 1; and
3. aerosols with a subsidiary risk of Division 6.1 or Class 8 must not be transported in the same packaging as food items.

99% of aerosols supplied and transported by or on behalf of Linkup Paint Supplies fall under UN 1950. Each canister is under 1 litre in capacity — most are 400mL, with the largest approximately 750mL — allowing for transport alongside other classes without segregation requirements.

Transporting Aerosols as Dangerous Goods Limited Quantities (DGLQ)

The "UN Model Regulations Rev. 24 (2025)" outlines the requirements for transporting Aerosols that are classified as UN 1950 as DGLQ.

In Chapter 3.2 - Dangerous Goods List, UN 1950 is listed as following special provision 277 to be classified as limited quantities in accordance with Chapter 3.4.

Special Provision 277 states: "For aerosols or receptacles containing toxic substances the limited quantity value for the purposes of exemptions in chapter 3.4 is 120 ml. For all other aerosols or receptacles the limited quantity value is 1 000 ml."
