#22 - High Solids (HS) vs Medium Solids (MS)
The majority of Automotive and Industrial Clearcoats fall into one of two main categories: HS or MS
HS Clearcoats typically have a solids content of 50% or more. This means they contain a higher concentration of resin and fewer solvents.
Because of their thicker consistency HS clear coats are typically applied with fewer coats, often just 1.5 to 2 (with no flash off between coats). This feature results in a quicker application process, achieving the required film build faster - ideal for fast turnaround Smash Repair work.
HS coatings can offer excellent UV protection with faster application.
MS clear coats, on the other hand, have a lower solids content, typically ranging from 35% to 50%. They contain a moderate amount of resin and solvents.
MS clear coats may require more coats, up to 2-3 to achieve the desired film build and gloss (with a flash off between coats). This can make their application process slightly longer. However, this application style can be more forgiving in terms of making them potentially more suitable for less experienced applicators.
Note: In NZ, regardless if HS or MS is used, the MINIMUM dry film build for a clearcoat to protect basecoat colours (especially from NZ UV exposure) is 50 microns
